Functional GD&T Assessment

A  Functional GD&T Assessment is done based on the requirements of an assembly.  Customer requirements drive product requirements which drive mechanical design.  Assembly fit and performance is a function of assembly process, functional part design and tolerance assignments.  When GD&T is applied to the model or drawing, designers must consider datum selection, datum priority, tolerance type, modifiers, refinements, and tolerance value.  Tolerance values should consider the manufacturing process and should be determined through tolerance analysis.  In the end, the dimensional control communicated by the drawing or model must support and ultimately achieve the product requirements per the customer.
