Tolerance Analysis Fundamentals (300-00-035) is a self-paced course built to help engineers and quality teams understand, document, and apply 1D tolerance stackups with consistency. Using a combination of lecture videos, detailed exercises, and a software demonstration, the course focuses on the practical skills needed to evaluate how dimensional variation affects an assembly requirement—then use that insight to improve nominal design choices and tolerance assignments.

You’ll start with the need and objectives for using tolerance stackups, then learn how to define and analyze stackups using both worst-case and statistical approaches (with statistical techniques limited to Root-Sum-Squares (RSS)). A key theme is making stackups reviewable: you’ll learn the elements of a strong tolerance stackup sketch, and how clear documentation helps cross-functional teams align on assumptions and results.

The course also addresses real-world complications that regularly drive variation: how to account for clearances between parts (including floating vs. biasing), how to evaluate both directly toleranced (+/–) dimensions and geometric tolerances (ASME GD&T and ISO GPS), and how to include the impact of material modifiers using both worst-case and statistical methods. You’ll also cover fixed and floating fastener formulas. Finally, you’ll see a software-based demonstration of 1D stackup workflows with comparison to manual spreadsheet approaches.
